Doing our part to conserve and protect

http://www.castlepinesconnection.com/pages/news/2013/qtr2/cpc/earthDay.html

Earth Day is April 22. For those who are unfamiliar with it, Earth Day is designed to raise awareness for what humanity can do to better conserve and protect the precious natural resources we have been given. Even those who have never heard of Earth Day may already know a few things about conserving resources: turning down the thermostat, recycling, and perhaps even driving an electric car. But many people don’t understand the importance of the specific role they play in protecting our planet.

“Every person has a role to play, and it starts by becoming aware,” says Dr. Carol Barbeito, a Colorado resident of more than three decades and the former chair of the Castle Pines Sustainability Committee.

Dr. Barbeito is also the president of Earth Protect, a Castle Pines company dedicated to raising awareness about what individuals can do to help the environment on a global scale. One of the ways Earth Protect seeks to do this is through its video-focused website, where, as Dr. Barbeito puts it, people can be “edutained” — taught to live sustainably in a fun, exciting way — by watching short films from nineteen award-winning filmmakers. Earth Protect also partners with many educational organizations, such as the Denver University School of Business, the University of California, San Diego Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and the Colorado Environmental Education Association to provide reliable information to people who seek it.

According to Dr. Barbeito, the problem with conservation is that “information is all fractioned. Our site puts it all together,” she says. She emphasizes that Earth Protect is also a way for people to express their own stories and the different efforts they are making to protect the planet. It’s a way for people to truly understand their roles. As Dr. Barbeito puts it, “Everyone can make a contribution.”
